Message from the Chancellor

Dear Friends,

It is my distinct honor to welcome you to the University of Northern Virginia!

I assumed the Chancellor position of the University of Northern Virginia in 2012 after 30 years of teaching and academic leadership, the last four years as Academic Dean of UNVA. What has fueled my career is a love of teaching and learning and a desire to engage students in their education.

The constant thread throughout UNVA’s history is the way in which those who have worked and studied at UNVA have defined the institution. Our students' educational experience is at the center of everything we do, from the design of our academic and co-curricular programs, to each student's learning experiences in the classroom, laboratory, internship and beyond.

Excellence does not stand still. And it calls us, by its very nature, to move forward, to reach higher. No, striving for excellence isn't – and shouldn't be – a matter of exhaustion. I think it's more a matter of making thoughtful choices. We create an environment in which our students develop their intellectual abilities and hone their professional skills, and we inspire them to unlock their own potential and become active participants and leaders in their communities and in the world around them. But everything that supports that mission is crucial to our success. Our staff take pride in providing student focused service whenever students need help.  They have worked diligently to provide excellence in instruction in beautiful facilities with dedicated support. Our classes are small and interactive, allowing students and faculty to share perspectives and pursue knowledge together. And teaching is the central mission of the University. Certainly, faculty are continually trying to improve their teaching – creating new courses, changing their syllabus, trying new pedagogical techniques, exploring new fields of study.

UNVA is a place where you will form lasting relationships with a diverse and dedicated group of individuals who share your interest in learning. Once again, we have a record number of graduates this year, more than 800 graduated in June 2012 in USA.  These men and women have chosen UNVA as their partner of their future life and careers to be succeed.

As UNVA’s Chancellor, I invite you to explore our web site and learn more about our dynamic teaching and learning community. If you are intrigued by what you find, we welcome you for a visit to campus, where you can discover the UNVA experience for yourself.
