After You Have Been Admitted to UNVA




The University of Northern Virginia welcomes both domestic and international applicants.



Aptitude Requirement



 

 

 

  • New applicants must have a minimum 2.75 GPA (a B or better where A=4.0) from a college or university.
  • Transfer students must have a minimum 2.75 GPA (a B or better where A=4.0) from a college or university.
  • GMAT or GRE test is not required for admission decisions.

English Language Proficiency Requirement



Applicants whose native language is not English (identified by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Public Affairs) must provide evidence of English language proficiency or may be admitted with English conditions and required to complete the Institutional TOEFL exam upon their arrival at UNVA. Conditionally admitted students who do not receive a satisfactory score on the Institutional TOEFL will be required to complete the Advanced level of the ESL program at UNVA. The English proficiency requirement may be fulfilled by meeting one of the following:



 

 

  • Minimum score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 80 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • Minimum overall band of 6.0 with the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Exceptions to the English (TOEFL/IELTS) Requirement:



 

 

 

  • Applicants holding a Bachelor's and/or Master's degree from a nationally/regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
  • Applicants who have successfully completed the Advance level of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at UNVA.
  • Applicants who have completed four (4) years of school outside the U.S. with English as the medium of instruction.

Financial Guarantee



All international applicants on F-1 visa must provide an Affidavit of Support to show evidence of sufficient funds available for their studies before the application can be processed.



Application Deadlines



You must submit a signed and dated Application for Admission, along with the application fee, by the deadline specified for each term. In order to expedite the evaluation of your application, also submit official transcripts, test scores and supporting credentials immediately.

Application Procedures

 

 

 

 

 

 

  1. Complete the Graduate Admission Application. Click here to submit the application form online. You may also print the form and send it along with all required materials to the Office of Admissions.
  2. Submit the non-refundable application fee. The application fee is $60 (U.S. dollars). You may pay online through UNVA Webcart, with a credit card by submitting the payment form, or by submitting a non-refundable application fee in the form of a check or money order drawn on a U.S. Banking Affiliate and made payable to "University of Northern Virginia". Do not send cash or international postal money orders. Application fees cannot be waived or transferred to a future application. The processing fee of $200 is required for all applicants who apply visa outside the U.S.
  3. Request that an official transcript be sent directly from your school(s) to Undergraduate Admissions. If you have not yet completed your degree, upon graduation or completion of the semester, request that a final transcript be sent directly to UNVA to determine final admission status.
  4. Submit evidence of English language proficiency.



    Have your TOEFL or IELTS score sent directly to UNVA.



    TOEFL: The official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score report can be sent directly to UNVA from the Educational Testing Service. UNVA's TOEFL institutional code is 7940. For information about this test and registration procedures, contact ETS at PO Box 6151 Princeton, NJ 08541-6151, USA or visit www.toefl.org.



    IELTS: For information about this test and registration procedures, contact the IELTS Office, University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate, 1 Hills Road, Cambridge/CB1 2EU, UK or visit www.ielts.org.
  5. Submit an Affidavit of Support. In compliance with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations, all international applicants on an F-1 (student) visa must provide evidence of sufficient funds available for their studies. Applicants must submit a certified/notarized affidavit of support and a bank statement (both of which should not be older than three months); it must be co-signed by an authorized bank or representative of a recognized sponsoring agency in the U.S.A. An Affidavit of Support cannot be used in lieu of a bank statement. UNVA has provided an Affidavit of Support that applicants may use. UNVA requires a certified/notarized bank statement or a bank letter on official letterhead that has been cosigned by a banking official.

    Review estimate tuition and fees.

  6. Submit two professional reference forms or recommendation letters. References and recommendations should be from academic or professional references who can evaluate your potential for success in your studies.
  7. Submit copy of your passport ID page.



    When you are ready to apply, please send the completed application and all supporting documents (application fee, transcripts, test scores, financial guarantee, recommendation letters and ID) to the address listed below. Make sure you have filled out all documents completely (incomplete, unsigned applications cannot be processed). Additional supporting documents are required (copy of stamped I-20, I-94, F-1 visa, passport ID page, all I-20 forms previous school(s) attended) for international transfer applicants.



    Admission to UNVA cannot be determined until your file is complete and all of your credentials are evaluated.

After You Have Been Admitted to UNVA



For all students:



 

 

 

 

 

  • Please arrive on campus to attend the mandatory new student orientation.
  • Please activate your UNVA student e-mail account. The UNVA e-mail ID gives you access to the UNVA online system which you will use to keep track of your academic progress, your UNVA e-mail account as well as any financial obligations.
  • Please contact your academic advisor to schedule for an appointment to discuss class selections and registration.
  • Please contact our Student Services Office at help@unva.edu for services like airport pick-up, student housing, student ID card, and health insurance.
  • Please contact your Admissions Counselor to activate your student portal account to register for classes before the term begins.




For international students:



Visa and Immigration Procedures



 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Your SEVIS I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Non-Immigrant Student Status), essential for securing an F-1 student visa, will be forwarded to you after your application for admission has been approved.
  • Take your SEVIS I-20 and letter of admission to the nearest U.S. Embassy to apply for a student visa.
  • When arriving in the United States, show your SEVIS I-20 and your letter of admission to the U.S. customs/immigration officials at the airport.
  • Arrive at UNVA no later than one week before classes begin according to the information on the SEVIS I-20. UNVA cannot authorize you to arrive later or change the information on your SEVIS I-20. Report immediately to the Office of Admissions and the Office of International Student Affairs (OISA) with your immigration documents for SEVIS registration.
  • If you are an international student currently in the United States, you must meet with your current school's International Student Advisor/Designated School Official (DSO) and complete a SEVIS Transfer Release Form to determine an appropriate date to transfer your SEVIS record to UNVA. UNVA's school code is WAS214F01186000. Please submit your UNVA letter of admission to your current school's DSO, and your SEVIS record will be released to UNVA. After your SEVIS record has been released to UNVA, please pick up your new SEVIS I-20 from the Office of Admissions, and report to the Office of International Student Affairs (OISA).
  • You must enroll as a full-time student every term for three (3) consecutive terms in each academic year.
