After You Have Been Admitted to UNVA
Application Requirements
An international student is a student who is not a citizen of, or a permanent resident of, or a refugee in the United States of America (F & J Visas). Wish to study in the U.S. under at student (F-1) visa. Those with a valid B-1 or B-2 visas must change their status to F-1). UNVA assists other types of visa (A, B, E, G, H, I, J, K, L, O, P, Q, R) to change their status to F-1.
Aptitude Requirement
- Earned a Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Computer Science, Information Technology and/or Education with a minimum 3.0 GPA (a B or better where A=4.0) from a college or university.
- International students do not need to take the GMAT or GRE tests for admission.
English Language Proficiency Requirement
Applicants whose native language is not English (identified by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Public Affairs) must provide evidence of English language proficiency. The English proficiency requirement may be fulfilled by meeting one of the following:
- Minimum score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 80 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- Minimum overall band of 6.0 with the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Exceptions to the English (TOEFL/IELTS) Requirement:
- Applicants holding a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
- The TOEFL is not required for admission for applicants who have successfully completed the Advance level of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at UNVA.
Financial Guarantee
All international applicants on F1 or J1 visas must provide a Affidavit of Support to show evidence of sufficient funds available for their studies before the application can be processed. In addition, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) require UNVA to obtain additional information prior to processing your visa application.
Preferential Application Deadlines
You must submit the Application for graduate Admission, along with the application fee, by the deadline specified for each semester. In order to expedite the evaluation of your application, also submit official transcripts, test scores and supporting credentials immediately.

Application Procedures
- Complete the Undergraduate Admission Application. Click here to apply. Please complete the form and send all required materials to be mailed to the mailing address below.
- Submit the non-refundable application fee. The application fee is $60 (U.S. dollars). You may pay with a credit card by submitting with the payment form, or submit a non-refundable application fee in the form of a check or money order drawn on a U.S. Banking Affiliate and made payable to "University of Northern Virginia". Do not send cash or international postal money orders. Application fees cannot be waived or transferred to a future application. The processing fee of $200 is required for all applicants who apply visa outside the country.
- Request that an official transcript be sent directly from your school(s) to Undergraduate Admissions. Upon graduation or completion of the semester, request that a final transcript be sent directly to UNVA to determine final admission status.
- Submit evidence of English language proficiency.
Have your ACT, SAT, TOEFL or IELTS score sent directly to UNVA.
TOEFL: The official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score report can be sent directly to UNVA from the Educational Testing Service. UNVA's TOEFL institutional code is 7940. IELTS: For information about this test and registration procedures, contact the IELTS Office, University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate, 1 Hills Road, Cambridge/CB1 2EU, UK or visit www.ielts.org.
- Submit an Affidavit of Support. In compliance with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations, all international applicants on the F-1 (student) or J-1 (exchange) visa must provide evidence of sufficient funds available for their studies. The Financial Guarantee, dated within the past six months, must be co-signed by an authorized bank or representative of a recognized sponsoring agency in the U.S.A. An Affidavit of Support cannot be used in lieu of a bank statement. UNVA has an Affidavit Support Form (.pdf file). UNVA requires a bank statement or a bank letterhead that has been cosigned by a banking official. Review estimate tuition and fees.
Download the application and send the completed application and all supporting documents (application fee, transcripts, test scores and the financial guarantee) to the address listed below. Complete and sign the application (incomplete, unsigned applications cannot be processed).

After You Have Been Admitted to UNVA Visa, Immigration Procedures
Admission to UNVA cannot be determined until your file is complete and all of your credentials are evaluated.
- Your SEVIS I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Non-Immigrant Student Status), essential for securing an F-1 student visa, will be forwarded to you if you are admitted to UNVA. Keep your SEVIS I-20 in a secure place; UNVA will not issue a second SEVIS I-20.
- Take your SEVIS I-20 and letter of admission to the nearest U.S. Embassy to apply for a student visa.
- Arrive at UNVA no later than one week before classes begin according to the information on the SEVIS I-20. UNVA cannot authorize you to arrive later or change the information on your SEVIS I-20. Report immediately to the Office of International Student with your immigration documents for SEVIS registration.
- When arriving in the United States, show your SEVIS I-20 and your letter of admission to the U.S. customs/immigration officials at the airport.
- If you are an international student currently in the United States, you must inform your school's international student advisor of your plan to transfer your SEVIS information to UNVA. This must be done in order to receive a new UNVA I-20. Meet with an advisor at your current school and complete a SEVIS Transfer Release Form to determine an appropriate date to transfer to UNVA. UNVA's school code is WAS214F01186000. When you are admitted to UNVA, your SEVIS I-20 will be issued after the release date indicated by your school. When you arrive at UNVA, pick up your new SEVIS I-20 from Office of Admissions, report to the Office of International Students.
- You must enroll full-time each term for three (3) consecutive terms in an academic calendar.
